Year 6 Curriculum & Home Learning
Please open the guidance document here for a full explanation of Remote Home Learning at Upton during lockdown.
At this very challenging time for us all, we are providing what we hope is a range of engaging and accessible learning activities for your children. Upton uses the online platforms of ClassDojo primarily, supported increasingly by Google Classroom, and these are being continually updated and improved to support every child. All home learning is carefully planned, adapted and crafted to enable children to access new learning, apply existing and new skills, to gain new knowledge and embed prior learning.
Home learning does not of course mirror your child's experiences when in school. The dynamic, socially constructed and interactive nature of learning in the classroom, playground and beyond clearly cannot be replicated. Therefore, leaders and teachers plan essential learning each day, constructed from the aims of the National Curriculum, whilst considering the balance of broader learning and social experience. We would encourage every child and parent/carer to fully engage in this learning as much as is possible as these will be both supported by interactive learning and teaching by the teachers and will enable children to continue to make progress through and in the curriculum.
Broader learning is set daily to help children to not only apply their core knowledge and skills such as writing in a variety of genres, but to continue to develop every child as a learner, building strengths and understanding through each subject area.
We of course understand that as a family at home, there are many challenges and pressures to work through and you will only be able to do what your circumstances allow on a daily basis. We have therefore made the difficult decision not to set live learning with teachers, as your essential feedback has taught us that this is not meeting the situational needs of our community. Teaching is a mixture of recorded media by teachers themselves and the use of carefully reviewed and chosen resources from Oak Academy, White Rose Maths and various other sources.
Our home learning provision aims to guide children to different learning opportunities. Some opportunities set will feel like the learning they are more used to in school, some will ask children to do their best to work independently and other forms will be suggested to develop their own life-skills or own areas of interest.
When your child once again comes back to us, they will come with a multitude of new learning and skills that you have helped to give to them, no matter to what extent you are able to directly support them. We will again pick up the job where we left off and ensure your child makes good progress no matter what their starting point. Please base your decisions on your utmost ambition for your child at this time, and on what you believe to be the right balance for you as a family and know that we will respect and support this fully.
After much thought, we have decided not to set our normal homework , but teachers will listen to any reasonable requests that parents may have in finding additional challenge for children at home. We are regularly requesting, receiving and learning from your constructive feedback via our survey platforms and I wish to assure you that we are developing remote learning with this clearly in mind.
To every one of our families at home, try to make the most of every day, look to the future but equally try to accept the imperfect world we live in now and celebrate every learning step your children take, no matter how small. It WILL get better. Thank you all for your care and support.
